Theo Notteboom, César Ducruet, Brian Slack, and Justin Berli. “A Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment of Port Migration Patterns in the Global Port System since the 1950s”. Paper presented at IAME 2019, Athens, Greece, June 25-28 2019.

This paper examines the forces shaping port migration (defines as the shift of port infrastructure and/or maritime traffic from one location to another other location(s) over time). The paper ultimately concludes that there is no simple explanation that outlines the causes of port migration. However, the authors are able to illustrate the factors that are generally related to port migration.
