The greening of shipping: business as usual or the future of business? The motivations for the adoption of sustainable initiatives

Project Collaborator:

The maritime industry has shown to be proactively complying with increasingly constraining national environmental regulations. The goal of this research is to investigate the main motivations for the adoption of environmental sustainable, particularly by shipping lines and ports. First, the research will develop a  framework to identify and categorize the main motivations governing the adoption of environmental strategies. Second, the expected and actual impacts of those initiatives will be documented from the lenses of the dichotomy between stated and actual motivations. This project will attempt to present a comprehensive view  of the environmental initiatives in the maritime industry from a business perspective with the application of multi-methods (content analysis, stakeholder management, wicked problem analysis and descriptive statistics). Ultimately the research aims to provide some assessments about how consistent (or inconsistent) the greening of shipping is.
