Greening of Maritime Transportation: A Multi-Objective Optimization Approach

Authors:

Cheaitou, Ali and Pierre Cariou. “Greening of Maritime Transportation: A Multi-Objective Optimization Approach.” Annals of Operation Research. 262.2. (2018): 501-523.

This article is motivated by the growing concerns related to the CO2 and SOx emissions emitted from shipping activity. Its the intentions are to incentivize ship operators to consider the environmental impacts of their activities when attempting to maximize profit and calculating sailing speed. The research finds that the sensitivity of demand to transit time is based on the gap between economic and environmental optimal solutions and that policies considering imposing a tax on CO2 or SOx to reduce the negative externalities from international shipping should account for this element.
