Business Model Innovation For Managing Emissions In The Maritime Industry

Project Lead:

This research project explores incentives for managing emissions in the maritime industry. It aims at developing a market based mechanism for smart carbon reporting. One of the key features of this model is to relax the assumption of information asymmetry, which potentially can be enacted by the advent of blockchain technology. This model is explored in order to discuss current challenges for policy makers and potential opportunities for principals (ship owners). The activities concerning this research projects aim at a better understanding of the impact and opportunities of environmental legislations/policies with regards to emissions control and management with an emphasis on business opportunities and can be seen as a first step towards a better understanding of business model opportunities concerning emissions control and management. Ultimately, this project will seek to answer both the questions of how new business models allow shipping to cope with (new) environmental legislations/policies with regards to emission control as well as profit from (new) environmental legislations/policies with regards to emissions management.
