Virtual arrival was initially hailed as an economic and environmental benefit to the shipping industry. However, virtual arrival policies have rarely been implemented. Using primarily ethnographic and interview based research, this article illustrates the commercial and sociological impediments for virtual arrival practices in commercial shipping that need to be considered when attempting to reduce carbon emissions.
